Seams are often the weakest point of a garment when it comes to waterproofing, as water can easily penetrate where the fabric is stitched together.
Taped seams mean that the seams on the inside of the garment are covered with waterproof tape, which prevents water from seeping through the needle holes. This makes the garment waterproof, but the seams are still more vulnerable than the fabric itself and cannot withstand as much water pressure.
Welded seams are used on plastic-based materials like Galon. Instead of being stitched, the material is melted together at the seam, creating a completely sealed joint without holes. Welded seams provide a much stronger and more waterproof construction compared to taped seams.
